Much more than simple restoration work

The project for the restoration and enhancement of the Reggia Ducale of Reggio Emilia is much more than a simple redevelopment.
The Reggia (with adjoining park and secret garden) was built in 1740, commissioned by the Duchy of Este. The French influences are immediately apparent, somewhat reminiscent of the Palace of Versailles.
Much of the work carried out in Reggio Emilia has, as its primary objective, the preservation of the historical memory of the place, without ‘distorting’ the original imprint of the Reggia.

Project Details

The restoration also includes the rebuilding of the wall where a collapse occurred. Where possible, salvaged material sourced from local suppliers specialising in the production of historical material was used. In some places, a steel structure was built, which was then covered with ivy in the final stage.
Drainage works and dispersing wells were carried out due to the presence of aquifers in the ground underneath.

The whole park is intended as a place where people can enjoy recreational activities: walking, sports, cycling.

Main interventions

The strengths of the project

Safeguarding historical heritage: during redevelopment work, we never lose sight of the preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of the site and take particular care not to intervene unless strictly necessary.

Special attention to green spaces: all green spaces are thoroughly studied, with the support and supervision of an agronomist.

Redevelopment of the area: the park will be a fundamental strategic point for the city of Reggio Emilia, no longer just a space to be crossed, but also one for social gathering.

Sustainability

All the materials used for the work are environmentally friendly: from the glass grit inserted into the concrete benches to the material used to construct the 52 lampposts that will illuminate the park.

In addition to all this, special attention has been paid to the green area: everything has been redesigned with the absolutely natural growth of all plants in mind. An in-depth study has been carried out for each plant species: from the simplest shrubs to orchards within the secret garden.

A water recycling system has also been set up, taking advantage of the historic fountains: only recycled water is used to irrigate the ground, while draining material has been used for the paving.
