The Palazzetto dello Sport in Bergamo was built in the 1960s and showed its over 60 years of age. Starting in 2026, it will become the new home of the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art. The regeneration project for the building will completely transform the interior spaces: the elliptical shape will be retained, and the bleachers will be demolished in order to use the interior space for museum activities.

The new Gamec will rise in a strategic point for the city of Bergamo, which has been waiting a while for the old Palazzetto to come back to life. The body of the bar/restaurant with a glass façade will be located on the terrace of the new building, providing a whole new viewpoint over the city of Bergamo.
The project of the new GAMeC was born with the primary intention of providing the Gallery with new spaces, not only physical, but also and above all for artistic expression. It is for this very reason that the exhibition halls are major protagonists of this restoration and take on a strong structural importance.
The new Gallery has a very special conformation: it is suspended over the ground floor and this characterises it from both architectural and structural points of view.
The work on the new GAMeC in Bergamo goes beyond the classical sustainability parameters to be met (recycling of materials, carbon dioxide savings). The redevelopment of this building is sustainable precisely because it makes available to the community a space that would otherwise have remained completely unused.
This is how buildings become banks of energy and raw materials, and once renovated, they also become building blocks of urban identity.
