Between past and future

On a former railway site from the early 1930s, work is underway to build new, modern Trenitalia offices. The intervention consists of the conversion of 3 buildings that were previously used for repairing old coaches and locomotives.
The project aims to create modern executive offices that will assume regional and national importance. Three rooms will be set aside for the construction of three CED (Data Processing Centres) or ‘star points’ as they are called by computer scientists, from which both the regional and partly also the national network will be managed.

Project Details

Externally, the current appearance is generally maintained, but the offices will have a modern, innovative look. The interiors, on the other hand, are completely revolutionised: for each of the three buildings, independent three-storey steelwork structures are inserted to make full use of the internal volume, thus recreating a subdivision of the rooms in elevation and extension that can compete with the most hi-tech modern buildings.

The walls are duly stiffened, reinforced and framed together for maximum safety in the event of an earthquake.

Sustainability

The reconversion of these buildings is strategic for the entire neighbouring area and the surrounding suburbs, and is part of the wider objective of bringing a modern and innovative development to the city of Florence.

The wood of the glass walls is of FSC quality. It is wood from responsibly managed forests, following high environmental, social and economic standards.

Extensive use is made of completely recycled material: the aluminium in the walls comes from other recycled aluminium; the exterior and interior plasters are environmentally neutral. This means that no quarry was used, no river deposits were exploited and no chemical additives were used for construction.

All this with the clear objective of not producing polluting emissions and of promoting living comfort.
